Descriptions: The Alderson Convalescent Hospital, is an elderly rest home. Anderson Convalescent Hospital provides support to those who are limited in their ability to care for themselves.

Volunteers are needed for one-to-one visits with the residents of the hospital. Other activities are possible, such as an educational program and Bingo. Daytime and evening commitments are preferred. Group projects are also available.

Descriptions: The American Cancer Society is dedicated to conquering cancer and minimizing the burden of those who currently have cancer. The Society employs a three-level approach to meeting these goals:
-support cancer research;
-conduct education programs for early detection and prevention of cancer; and
-provide services and rehabilitation programs to cancer patients and their families, including tangible items as well as counseling through support group functions.

There are two support groups in Yolo County.

-HOPE: resources for the Crisis of Cancer, offering tools to deal with the educational and emotional aspects of cancer; and
-I Can Cope, a series of eight classes with lectures, discussions, and study assignments to help participants regain a sense of self-control.

Cancer patients, their families, and close friends are eligible to join these groups.

Various volunteer opportunities are available including office assistance, health fairs, smoking cessation and breast self-exam teaching, and other educational seminars. A training period is required of volunteers and is provided by the agency.

Descriptions: The ASUCD Pantry is a student-run, student-directed campus food pantry under the Associated Students of UC Davis (ASUCD), serving up to 800 students daily through fresh produce, bread, non-perishable products, and basic necessities. We are located on the first floor of the Memorial Union, open 7 days a week.

INDIVIDUALS:
Volunteers will directly interact with and assist students as they visit, as well as work to maintain the Pantry space. We ask our quarterly-committed volunteers for a 1.5 or 3 hour/week. One-time sign-ups are also available on our website.

SUMMARY:
We have had 47,000+ visits in the 2018-2019 school year, and to operate, we have recruited, trained, and scheduled 120+ volunteers to staff the Pantry and now we are looking for Spring '20 volunteers to help expand our hours of operation.

Descriptions: Citizens Who Care serves the elderly and their caregivers in Davis and Woodland with a variety of programs. Volunteers can participate in the following programs:

In-Home Program: A volunteer is matched with a client whose caregiver is in need of a break and/or visit with an isolated senior in their home. Volunteers are asked to visit weekly for two hours. Volunteers for this program must be able to commit to at least six months of service.

Saturday Club Program: This is a social program that is held at the Davis Senior Center two Saturdays of the month from 10:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m. Volunteers can commit to long-term volunteering, or can choose to volunteer on a limited basis; even once is allowed. Volunteers must be scheduled. Volunteers are assigned to assist clients throughout the program. Staff includes a program director, and a health aide for clients in need of hands on assistance.

Qualifications: friendly and outgoing, interested in older adults, dependable, ability to work independently.

Descriptions: The City of Sacramento is a municipal government and provides fire, police, utility and other services for the city's residents. In addition, the city has a variety of amenities for both residents and visitors including parks, recreation programs, a zoo, and museums. Volunteers provide a broad source of expertise, talent, and manpower for City programs. Volunteers gain new skills, meet new people, make use of talents, develop greater knowledge and understanding of city government, help solve community issues, secure job references, explore career possibilities and gain personal satisfaction of making a difference in their community.

Volunteers assist with special events, animal care, gardening, tours, arts and crafts, child development, and much more. Some departments can utilize volunteers as young as 12, while others require the volunteer to be at least 21. Short-term options include helping with fairs, festivals, sports activities, adopt-a-park clean-ups and other one-day events. On-going opportunities offer the chance to work with animals as well as youth and seniors. Unpaid internships and group options are also available.

Descriptions: Courtyard Healthcare Center is a skilled nursing facility providing care to 120 elderly, adult handicapped, and retarded citizens. They have an active rehabilitation program and residential living. The Adopt-A-Grandparent program is one in which volunteers adopt a grandparent whom they get to know by visiting regularly. Volunteers are also needed to help with hobbies such as music and art and to participate in field trips. It is helpful if volunteers are studying in the area of human services or related fields and able to work independently when needed. On the job training and one-on-one instruction is provided.

Descriptions: Happy Tails cats are rescued from the city streets, dumpsters, and from abusive homes. Some are found discarded at feral colonies maintained by Happy Tails. Others are saved from local animal control agencies and the Sacramento SPCA. Happy Tails cats also come from the sick and the elderly who are no longer able to care for their companion. These animals only ask for a chance to have a loving home.

Happy Tails has cared for many types of animals cats, dogs, rabbits, turtles, etc. although cats make up the great majority of our adoptions. We are not strictly a cats-only organization, but we find it easier to maintain foster homes for cats and kittens as compared to other animals that require more care and more one-on-one attention. We do rescue dogs as foster homes and space become available.

Descriptions: Meals on Wheels Yolo County serves and delivers meals to homebound seniors within four cities: Woodland, Winters, Davis, and West Sacramento. We cook our meals at our main kitchen in Woodland, and have staff drive the prepared food out to the meal sites in each city, where staff and kitchen volunteers help to portion and pack the food into hot trays and cold bags, when they are then delivered by volunteers to seniors in the community.

We have two opportunities - volunteer drivers and kitchen aide/servers. Drivers deliver a freshly-made hot meal to elderly homebound any day from Monday through Friday. The regular hours needed for driving volunteers are from 10:30am to 12:30pm. Kitchen aide/servers assist at our meal sites to help pack delivery meals and to serve meals at the senior center. The hours needed for kitchen volunteers range at our different sites between 9:00am-12:30pm. We ask volunteers to try to commit to helping regularly - daily, once a week, twice a month, or a substitute as needed. All volunteers must be 18 or older. Driving volunteers complete a basic orientation and training, and typically drive their own vehicle to make deliveries. We also provide for a background check and make copies of car insurance and drivers licenses. We do not currently have volunteer opportunities on evenings or weekends.

Descriptions: Services Provided: Home repair or renovation for low-income elderly, disabled people or families with children. Homes must be structurally sound and need minor to moderate repairs and beautification work. Work is done on project day, the last Saturday of April, by volunteers who are supervised and trained by skilled tradespeople.

Businesses, foundations, community-based organizations and individuals donate cash, in-kind contributions (paint, lumber, fixtures, etc.), and skilled and unskilled volunteer workers. Organizations are asked to "adopt a home" by sponsoring a project and providing volunteer labor.

Descriptions: Yolo Hospice is a non-profit, community-based organization. It was run by volunteers until becoming Medicare and Medi-Cal certified in 1995. Since then, Yolo Hospice has developed a highly trained interdisciplinary team including a physician, a nurse practitioner, an all-RN nursing staff, Masters-trained Social Workers, Spiritual Care Counselors, Certified Nursing Assistants, Bereavement Specialist and a large base of volunteers specially trained in end of life care.
